New report reveals how cities can create a flourishing night-time economy

Eleven key factors can help cities develop their night-time economy, says a new report by Sound Diplomacy, the group behind the Music Cities movement.

According to the authors, the guide is the first to bring together varied, global efforts into one cohesive, implementable strategy and has created an economic and cultural plan for all cities to develop their night-time economy.

“All cities in the world have a night-time economy, but not all of them have the governance structures in place to manage what happens after dark,” said Andreina Seijas, co-author of A Guide to Managing Your Night Time Economy.

At a time when cities are increasingly recognising the significance of a strong night-time offering, not just for attracting youth and tourists but for local economic development, the guide aims to channel this to achieve positive socioeconomic outcomes in cities.

Eleven cities–from Asunción and Rosario to Berlin and London–are included as case studies to identify critical ways of developing the night-time economy.

“It helps clarify the many facets of night-time economies around the globe, as well as illuminating strategies for managing nightlife that have been successfully implemented in some of the world’s greatest cities,” said Ariel Palitz, Senior Executive Director, Office of Nightlife, New York City.

One such strategy employed in Amsterdam involved a three-year project designed to make a main nightlife district, Rembrandtplein, safer and welcoming to all after reports of alcohol-related violence. The initiative included reforming public spaces in the district to create a more pleasant experience for citizens, and extending nightclub opening hours to produce more staggered dispersal rather than all club-goers leaving at once. Two years later, nuisance reports have fallen 30 percent and reports of violence are down 25 percent.

Amsterdam’s former night mayor, Mirik Milan, says examples like this can only be good for other cities.

“We’re at the forefront of a global movement in night-time management,” he said. “This guide will inspire many cities because it shows the limitless possibilities for improvement the night brings.”

Shain Shapiro, author and CEO of Sound Diplomacy, said that further work needs to be undertaken to understand how less-researched regions can unlock their cities’ night-time potential.

“We need to do more digging to explore and reveal best practices from the Middle East and Africa,” he said. “We know they are there. It’s just the debate has not yet emerged in those regions yet.”

The guide lists 11 suggestions:

  • Plan for growth.
  • Support creative industries.
  • Responsibility breeds responsibility.
  • Save the night scene, one venue at a time.
  • Keep it safe but alive.
  • Improve your public spaces.
  • Density is a crime deterrent.
  • Time and data drive change.
  • Piggyback on local culture.
  • All voices matter.
  • Participation is key to revitalisation.
